BCU Maker Stories
Producer and recording engineer for a Crafts Council / Birmingham City University research podcast series. A Boutique Recording Project.

The aim of the Maker Stories podcast series was to showcase Interviews with Inspirational craftswomen discussing their journeys into craft and experiences in the sector.
The brief for this podcast series was to record and produce five episodes each focussed around an interview with Dr Karen Patel and a different craftswoman in their studio / workshop. Composition of a music / sound ident set was also required to tie in with the craft theme. Some of the foley sound design used in the ident was recorded in Jasmine Carey’s (episode 1) Deco 22 workshop in the Cockpit Arts studio complex in Deptford, with the cutting of material patterns and leather on the workshop desk.
With this project spanning 2019/2020 the main challenge we met was the global pandemic in early 2020, meaning only two episodes were to be recorded on location as scheduled, with the remainder being captured remotely via the Riverside platform.
The Maker Stories podcast was an element of the wider Craft Expertise project in collaboration with Crafts Council UK. The podcast host, and project lead was Dr Karen Patel, a Research Fellow at Birmingham City University.
